  26.  
  27. 1.  VirusScan for Windows 3.1x now provides the exceptional
  28.     virus detection rates and fast scanning performance of
  29.     the 3.0 engine series.
  30.        
  31.     VirusScan version 3.0 offers users maximum defense
  32.     against the newest threats to data. VirusScan 3.0
  33.     detects all virus types including Word and Excel macros,
  34.     boot-sector infections, file infections, multi-partite,
  35.     stealth, polymorphic and encrypted viruses.
  36.     
  37. 2.  VirusScan for Windows 3.1x now offers an Emergency Disk
  38.     creation utility. With this utility, you can create an
  39.     Emergency Disk during and after VirusScan installation
  40.     with your own high density floppy disk. This disk is an
  41.     important part of a complete security program.
  42.  
  43. 3.  McAfee Documentation installer is now included on the
  44.     VirusScan CD. The McAfee Documentation installer can
  45.     automatically install electronic documentation for your
  46.     VirusScan product to a hard drive on your system.
  47.  
  48.     Once installed, the documents for your VirusScan product
  49.     will be a mouse click away, in the same Start menu
  50.     program group as the other VirusScan components. For
  51.     more information on the McAfee Documentation installer,
  52.     see the Frequently Asked Questions listed below.

  54. 4.  VirusScan supports Microsoft Office97.
  55.  
  56. 5.  VirusScan for Windows 3.1x now implements VShield
  57.     as a virtual device driver (VxD). This will replace the
  58.     VShield Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) in Windows,
  59.     enhancing features and reducing the memory footprint.
  60.     VShield operates directly in the Windows environment, no
  61.     longer relying on a DOS TSR.
  62.  
  63.     VShield's VxD is a filter used to prevent the spread
  64.     or activation of Macro viruses attempting to replicate
  65.     within Windows applications, such as Microsoft Word
  66.     for Windows.
  67.  
  68.  
  69. * ENHANCEMENTS *
  70.  
  71. 1.  When a virus is found, VShield's VxD can prompt
  72.     the user for action or automatically repair,
  73.     quarantine, deny access to, or delete infected files.
  74.  
  75. 2.  McAfee's VShield VxD allows the user to configure when
  76.     to conduct a scan (for example: on file run, copy,
  77.     create, or rename; on floppy disk access) and which
  78.     files to include.
  79.  
  80. 3.  During installation, the DOS scanner provides the
  81.     user with the options of scanning the drive at boot up
  82.     and appending the installed directory to the path.
  83.  
  84. 4.  During installation, the option of loading VShield into
  85.     memory upon starting Windows is provided to the user.

  207. * ISSUES ADDRESSED IN THIS RELEASE *
  208.  
  209. 1.  The VShield TSR Awareness feature has been temporarily
  210.     removed from VirusScan due to reported issues regarding 
  211.     conflicts with other TSR programs. Reports of system 
  212.     lock-ups associated with this feature have been resolved.
  213.     The VShield TSR Awareness feature will be enhanced and 
  214.     fully implemented in the next release of VirusScan.

  217. KNOWN ISSUES
  218.  
  219. 1.  After the Emergency Disk is created and you use the
  220.     Enter key to continue VirusScan installation, you may
  221.     be prompted again to insert a blank formatted diskette.
  222.     
  223.     Solution #1: Do not use the Enter key to continue the
  224.     Emergency Disk creation after inserting the first disk.
  225.     Use the Space Bar or the mouse button instead.
  226.  
  227.     Solution #2: When you are prompted to insert another
  228.     blank formatted diskette, click OK. You will be asked
  229.     if you want to overwrite the information on the disk.
  230.     Click No.
  231.  
  232. 2.  If a write-protected diskette is used during Emergency
  233.     Disk creation while installing VirusScan, the utility
  234.     will return an error message and no Emergency Disk will
  235.     be created. This issue is with Windows 3.1 only.
  236.  
  237.     You can create an Emergency Disk after installation by
  238.     clicking on the Emergency Disk Creation Utility icon in
  239.     your McAfee VirusScan program group.
  240.  
  241. 3.  If Move Infected File is selected on the Actions page,
  242.     infected files will be moved to the directory specified. 
  243.     However, if the Windows Copy command fails during this
  244.     procedure, a zero byte file size stamp may be left in
  245.     the destination directory when carrying out the Copy
  246.     command.
  247.  
  248. 4.  If using NetX drivers to connect to 3.x Netware servers,
  249.     carrying out applications located on the server may
  250.     result in a Windows' sharing violation message during a
  251.     VShield file scan.
  252.  
  253.     Solution: To avoid the Window's sharing violation
  254.     message, add the following line to the default.vsh file
  255.     under the General section:
  256.  
  257.      bUsingNetx=1
  258.  
  259.     Or, change the application executed from the server to
  260.     Read Only.
  261.

  263. INSTALLATION
  264.  
  265. * INSTALLING THE PRODUCT *
  266.  
  267. If you would like to perform a "silent" installation
  268. of VirusScan, requiring minimal user interaction and
  269. using all default or "Typical" installation settings,
  270. add -s (i.e. SETUP.EXE -s) to the setup command when
  271. you install the product.
  272.  
  273. Network Administrators can customize the silent
  274. installation feature by following the steps outlined
  275. below.
  276.  
  277. 1.  Check in the Windows directory to ensure that a
  278.     file named SETUP.ISS does not already exist. If it
  279.     does, rename it, back it up, or delete it.
  280.  
  281. 2.  Run SETUP.EXE with the -r switch, (i.e. SETUP.EXE -r).
  282.  
  283. 3.  Select the components you would like to be installed
  284.     during the silent installation.  All responses will
  285.     be recorded.
  286.  
  287. 4.  Finish the installation, and locate the file SETUP.ISS
  288.     in the Windows directory.
  289.  
  290. 5.  Locate the section [SdSetupType-0] in the SETUP.ISS
  291.     file and go to the line:
  292.  
  293.         Result=x

  295.         where x is equal to
  296.         301 (Typical installation)
  297.         302 (Compact installation)
  298.         303 (Custom installation)
  299.  
  300. 6.  Add 100 to the above value, so that the Result
  301.     variable is equal to 401, 402, or 403. Modifying
  302.     this file will allow the installation to copy the
  303.     VirusScan files to the drive where the operating
  304.     system resides instead of defaulting to the C:
  305.     drive.
  306.  
  307. 7.  For CD-ROM or diskette versions of the product, you
  308.     must copy the installation files onto the hard drive
  309.     before taking this step.
  310.  
  311. 8.  Copy the new SETUP.ISS from the Windows directory
  312.     to the location of the installation files.
  313.  
  314. 9. Run SETUP.EXE with the -s switch (i.e. SETUP.EXE -s).
  315.  
  316.     NOTE: If you do not specify a "recorded" answer for
  317.     all dialog boxes during the initial installation, the
  318.     silent installation will fail. Also, the file used
  319.     for the silent installation, SETUP.ISS, may not work
  320.     properly across different operating systems.
  321.  
  322.     NOTE: System Administrators can add  win setup -s
  323.     to SETUP.ISS to create a silent install.
  324.  
  325. 10. When the silent installation is complete, you should
  326.     reboot the machine manually.
  327.

  412. create a folder and copy the files to it.

  415. that you restart your system.

  418. * TESTING YOUR INSTALLATION *
  419.  
  420. The Eicar Standard AntiVirus Test File is a combined effort 
  421. by anti-virus vendors throughout the world to come up with
  422. one standard by which customers can verify their anti-virus 
  423. installations. To test your installation, copy the following 
  424. line into its own file and name it EICAR.COM.
  425.

  427.  
  428. When done, you will have a 69 or 70 byte file.
  429.  
  430. When VirusScan is applied to this file, Scan will report
  431. finding the EICAR-STANDARD-AV-TEST-FILE virus.
  432.  
  433. It is important to know that THIS IS NOT A VIRUS. However,
  434. users often have the need to test that their installations
  435. function correctly. The anti-virus industry, through the
  436. European Institute for Computer Antivirus Research, has
  437. adopted this standard to facilitate this need.
  438.  
  439. Please delete the file when installation testing is
  440. completed so unsuspecting users are not unnecessarily 
  441. alarmed.

  483. A:  You can install McAfee Documentation installer directly
  484.     from the VirusScan CD by running SETUP.EXE from the
  485.     Manuals directory.

  488. Q:  How do I enable McAfee's Centralized Alerting and
  489.     Reporting?
  490.  
  491. A:  VirusScan now supports Centralized Alerting and
  492.     Reporting to a remote NetWare or Windows NT server
  493.     running NetShield v2.5.3 or later for Windows NT or
  494.     NetShield v2.3.3 or later for NetWare. 
  495.  
  496.     To set up this option on your VirusScan client, modify
  497.     VirusScan's DEFAULT.VSH, and/or your custom settings
  498.     file to read the following:

  500.     Note: Administrators will need to configure the
  501.     WSCAN.INI and/or DEFAULT.VSH file for complete
  502.     Centralized Alerting & Reporting.

  533.     The alert file sent to the server is an .alr text
  534.     file. Upon receipt of the alert file, NetShield NT or

  536.     administrator and/or appropriate personnel.

  540.     installation?

  542. A:  You can create an Emergency Disk after installation
  543.     by clicking on the Emergency Disk Creation Utility icon
  544.     in your McAfee VirusScan program group.

  547. Q:  When I have an infected file, why does the
  548.     infected counter increase by increments greater
  549.     than one?
  550.  
  551. A:  The file system will typically access a file more
  552.     than once. On each access, VirusScan scans the file
  553.     and detects the infection.

  556. Q:  Does VShield detect Word Macro infections?
  557.  
  558. A:  Yes. VShield detects and cleans Word Macro infections.
  559.

  561. Q:  Can I update VirusScan's data files to detect
  562.     new viruses?
  563.  
  564. A:  Yes. If you have Internet access, you can download
  565.     updated VirusScan data files from the McAfee Web 
  566.     Site, BBS, or other online resources. To download 
  567.     from the McAfee Web Site, follow these steps:
  568.  
  569.     1.  Go to the McAfee Web Site (http://www.mcafee.com
  570.         or 205.227.129.164.
  571.  
  572.     2.  Select Update DAT File in the left hand column
  573.         or frame.
  574.  
  575.     3.  Scroll down, and click Update Your DAT Files to
  576.         update your virus definition files.

  578.     4.  Data file updates are stored in a compressed form 
  579.         to reduce transmission time. Unzip the files into
  580.         a temporary directory, then copy the files to the
  581.         appropriate directory, replacing your old files.
